Identifying Research
Research, audit and service evaluation are often confused. Only research projects need to be reviewed and approved by a Research Ethics Committee and the processes described in the following sections apply to research projects only. Audit and service evaluation are the remit of the Clinical Governance and Risk Management Development Unit (CGRMDU).
Further information can be found at the NRES website , specifically the NRES leaflet – Defining research. Briefly, the key discriminants between the three project types are as follows:
• Intent: the primary aim of research is to derive new knowledge; audit and service evaluation measure level of care.
• Treatment: neither audit nor service evaluation uses a treatment without a firm basis of support in the clinical community.
• Allocation: neither audit nor service evaluation allocate treatment by protocol. It is by decision of clinician and patient.
• Randomisation: If randomisation is used, it is research.
