Cardiology patient journey

Following a discussion with your doctor, you have agreed to come to the Golden Jubilee National Hospital for an investigation or treatment.

If you are having a coronary angiogram, you will have your procedure within four weeks of us receiving your referral. If you are having any other Cath Lab procedure you will have your procedure within nine weeks of us receiving your referral.

Before your visit to one of our Cath Labs, you will be given a time to attend the Cardiac Day Unit or Ward 2C in advance of your procedure.

We will make every effort to ensure you are not delayed and that you are comfortable throughout your stay, but delays can be unavoidable.

Please inform your relatives that the contact number for the Cardiac Day Unit is 0141 951 5886 or for Ward 2C the number is 0151 951 5203. This will allow them to contact the Day Unit or Ward 2C for information on the day of your procedure.

Preparation at home and things to bring with you

Before you leave home, have a light breakfast such as tea and a slice of toast unless you have been told you are having a general anaesthetic. If you are in doubt or have any questions, please contact the Cardiac Day Unit.

What to bring with you:

Dressing gown and slippers.
All your medications in their original containers.
Something to read to help pass the time.

General health

If you have any changes in your general health for example a cold or influenza, or if you are being treated with antibiotics please call the Cardiac Day Unit for advice.

Driving restrictions

It is important that you arrange for someone to drive you to the hospital as you will have restrictions on your driving after your procedure.

If you require hospital transport please contact your GP in the first instance. If that is unsuccessful please contact our transport department on 0141 951 5518.

Travel costs

Patients on certain benefits may be eligible to receive a refund on the cost of the public transport such as bus, train or underground fares, with the exception of taxi fares.

If you are eligible, please bring proof of those benefits along with your transport ticket receipts and present these at our cash office to be reimbursed for these expenses.

Data Protection Act and research

All NHS hospitals in Scotland store patient details on the same central computer database. Your information is used to record the care you are given and also to compare and hopefully improve the results of treatment in different hospitals.

All your medical records are confidential and only the doctor and other healthcare professionals looking after you will be allowed to look at your medical records.

The results are gathered anonymously and your records cannot be identified as you. This type of information collection is carried out in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

If you do not want your information stored in this way you have the right to refuse permission. If you do not wish us to include your information in this database please tell your nurse.

Taking part in research

The Golden Jubilee National Hospital participates in a number of research studies. During your stay here, you may be approached by a member of the Cardiology Research Team and invited to take part in such a study.

Participation in research is entirely voluntary and will not affect the standard of care you receive.
