Cardiology services
The interventional cardiology service at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital aims to deliver the highest standards of care to those who need planned (elective) or urgent / emergency procedures.
The diagnosis and treatment for various coronary, lung, grown up congenital heart disease and electrophysiological disorders is delivered in our Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories (Cath Labs).
In these Labs you may have one of the following procedures.
- Angioplasty – when a balloon and/or a small metal coil (stent) is used to open narrowed areas in the arteries of your heart.
- Angiography – involves passing a fine tube via the artery, (large blood vessel) in your leg or wrist, directly to your heart.
- Electrophysiology – this involves using electrical currents to check for, and diagnose, heart disease.
- Other types of angiography and treatment of cardiac disorders.
We have four Cath Labs:
- One has additional speciality equipment to help diagnose and treat disorders of heart rhythm (Electrophysiological or EP).
- One is a bi-plane Cath Lab which allows intricate treatment of a broad range of more complex disease.
- A further two fully equipped coronary diagnosis and treatment labs.
Before and after your procedure, you will be looked after in one of four areas:
- The Cath Lab Day Ward.
- The Cardiology Overnight Ward.
- The Coronary Care Unit.
- Ward 3 East or 3 West.
A large part of our work is treating patients suffering from a heart attack. It has been shown that if someone has a heart attack, their outcome is improved if they have their blocked arteries opened by a Cath Lab team as quickly as possible.
We are one of two sites working closely with the Scottish Ambulance Service to provide this service – known as Optimal Reperfusion – to patients in the west of Scotland.
