Heart and Lung

The Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Clydebank has responsibility for a range of regional and national heart and lung services, delivering high quality patient care and an improved patient experience through good management and the concentration of resources, skills and expertise.

What services are provided at the centre?

  • All adult heart and lung surgery for the west of Scotland – including all bypasses, heart valve surgery and other complex procedures.
  • Three of the country’s national services – the Scottish Advanced Heart Failure Service ( including the heart transplant unit), the Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit and the Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac Service.
  • Interventional cardiology services, including angioplasty, angiography, electrophysiology and complex pacemakers.
    • Angioplasty is when a balloon and/or a small metal coil (stent) is used to open narrowed areas in the arteries of your heart.
    • Angiography involves passing a fine tube via the artery, (large blood vessel) in your leg or wrist, directly to your heart.
    • Electrophysiology uses electrical currents to check for, and diagnose, heart disease.

Spread over three inpatient floors of the hospital, heart and lung facilities include seven theatres and four cardiac catheterisation (cath) labs – special x-ray rooms for diagnosis and treatment of blood vessel blockages around the heart.

You will be treated in your local hospital in the first instance. If you need to have a planned or urgent surgical or interventional cardiology procedure, you will be referred for treatment at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital.
