Heart and Lung
The centre of excellence delivers high quality patient care and an improved patient experience through good management and the concentration of resources, skills and expertise.
What services are provided at the new centre?
- All adult heart and lung surgery for the west of Scotland – including all bypasses, heart valve surgery and other complex procedures.
- Three of the country’s national services – the Scottish Advanced Heart Failure Service ( including the heart transplant unit), the Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit and the Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac Service.
- Interventional cardiology services, including angioplasty, angiography, electrophysiology and complex pacemakers, will be done at the new centre.
- Angioplasty is when a balloon and/or a small metal coil (stent) is used to open narrowed areas in the arteries of your heart.
- Angiography involves passing a fine tube via the artery, (large blood vessel) in your leg or wrist, directly to your heart.
- Electrophysiology uses electrical currents to check for, and diagnose, heart disease.
The West of Scotland Regional Heart and Lung Centres brought together services at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital with cardiothoracic (heart and lung) services from Glasgow’s Western and Royal infirmaries, as well as thoracic (lung) services from Hairmyres Hospital in Lanarkshire.
Spread over three inpatient floors of the Golden Jubilee, facilities at the modern, purpose-built centre include seven theatres and four cardiac catheterisation (cath) labs – special x-ray rooms for diagnosis and treatment of blood vessel blockages around the heart.
