Heart procedures

Currently, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital performs a number of heart procedures and investigations.

Our Cardiology and Perfusion Departments support our heart programme to deliver the best patient care possible.

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)

Commonly known as bypass surgery, this uses a blood vessel (called a graft) taken from the chest, leg or arm to bypass a narrowed or blocked coronary artery. This can improve blood flow to the heart and reduce the chance of a heart attack.

Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR)

The main purpose of a valve replacement is to relieve the symptoms of a narrowed or leaky heart valve. The heart can usually manage despite a leaky or narrowed valve, but it has to work much harder and can result in heart failure.

Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (cath lab)

Our four Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (cath lab) provide an efficient and high quality service with state-of-the-art flat plane imaging system designed specifically for cardiac procedures.

Our highly skilled multidisciplinary team – including Consultant Cardiologists, specialist nurses, Radiographers and Cardiac Physiologists – carry out a number of procedures.

These keyhole-type diagnostic and interventional procedures include:

  • coronary angiography and intervention
  • electrophysiology procedures to diagnose and treat heart rhythm disturbances
  • diagnosis and treatment of adult congenital heart disease
  • diagnosis of pulmonary vascular disorders

Cardiac Day Unit

Our Cardiac Day Unit is a 16-chair day care unit adjacent to the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (cath lab).

Patients are admitted here before having their procedures carried out in the cath lab.
This area provides:

  • care before and after cath lab procedures
  • discharge planning, including patient education.
