Heart procedures
Currently, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital performs a number of heart procedures and investigations.
Our Cardiology and Perfusion Departments support our heart programme to deliver the best patient care possible.
Commonly known as “cabbage” surgery, this uses a blood vessel (called a graft) taken from the chest, leg or arm to bypass a narrowed or blocked coronary artery. This can improve blood flow to the heart and reduce the chance of a heart attack.
The main purpose of a valve replacement is to relieve the symptoms of a narrowed or leaky heart valve. The heart can usually manage despite a leaky or narrowed valve, but it has to work much harder and can result in heart failure.
Our four Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (cath lab) provide an efficient and high quality service with state-of-the-art flat plane imaging system designed specifically for cardiac procedures.
Our highly skilled multidisciplinary team – including Consultant Cardiologists, specialist nurses, Radiographers and Cardiac Physiologists – carry out a number of procedures.
These keyhole-type diagnostic and interventional procedures include:
- coronary intervention
- right and left heart catheterisation
- Angiography and/or Angioplasty, possibly with a stent (implant of a small metal coil)
- implanting temporary or permanent pacemakers to regulate heart rhythms
- device closure of adult congenital heart defects – e.g. Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), Patent Formaen Ovulae (PFO).
Cardiac Day Unit
Our Cardiac Day Unit is a 16-chair day care unit adjacent to the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (cath lab).
Patients are admitted here before having their procedures carried out in the cath lab.
This area provides:
- nurse led assessments for surgery
- care before and after surgery
- discharge planning, including patient education.

Our staff are constantly updated on new and/or advanced procedures to ensure we are constantly providing the best possible service for our patients.
Our Perfusion Department provides a full range of life support techniques to patients requiring cardiac surgery. These include:
- cardiopulmonary bypass techniques
- ultrafiltration
- myocardial preservation systems
- physiological measurement analysis
- blood biochemistry analysis
- Intra Aortic Balloon Pump Therapy.
The team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
