Orthopaedic

Our Orthopaedic Department has a multidisciplinary approach to care, with our consultants, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists all working together for one purpose – the benefit of our patients.

This team also works closely with the hospital’s Discharge Coordinator to ensure our patients are released with a view to progressing their rehabilitation in the community.

Patients staying here may have had the following:

  • hip replacement
  • knee replacement
  • minor hand or foot surgery
  • Iliazarov frames for limb correction and/or lengthening.

We currently have two orthopaedic theatres, providing an average of 38 joint replacements per week. In December 2006, our Board approved plans to bring two previously unused theatres into commission – ensuring we can carry out even more orthopaedic surgery than ever before.

These ultra clean air theatres are due to become operational in late 2007 and will be used for a combination of major and minor orthopaedic procedures. The theatres are being designed to ensure they can also be used for other types of surgery if the need arises.

Orthopaedic Outpatients

The Orthopaedic Outpatients Department is on level two, next to the main orthopaedic ward and the Radiology and Rehabilitation departments.

Clinics within this area include:

  • assessments before surgery
  • consultant review clinics before and after surgery
  • dressing clinics.
Arthroplasty clinic

Our Arthroplasty clinic, led by nursing and physiotherapy staff, works with patients who have had joint replacement surgery to reduce the risk of them being readmitted to hospital.

The Arthroplasty team do this in a number of ways, including:

  • reviewing most hip or knee replacement patients before they go home
  • advising of potential progress on mobility and pain
  • reviewing knee replacement patients at six weeks and then one, two and five years after surgery
  • reviewing hip replacement patients at three months and then one, two and five years after surgery
  • arranging review appointments with consultants, if necessary.
