Anaesthesia
The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine has established itself as a major centre of excellence in anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine.
The department has an outstanding international reputation attracting visiting anaesthetists from all over the world.
Recently, the department has extended its role following the appointment of two new consultants and now provides active support for the Outpatient pre-admission clinics, as well as taking the lead role in both our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Acute Pain Service.
Two of our consultants have honorary senior lecturer status with the University of Glasgow and there is an active research programme that attracts a steady stream of research fellows to the hospital.
The main areas of interest are:
- target-controlled intravenous anaesthesia
- monitoring depth of anaesthesia
- thoracic epidural anaesthesia and pain relief
- regional anaesthesia for lower limb surgery
- transoesophageal echocardiography – a two dimensional cardiac imaging technique.
These five areas provide the focal point for improving the patient’s journey through the various surgical specialties.
