Clinical Governance
The Clinical Governance and Risk Management Development Unit (CGRMDU) supports all our staff in delivering safe and effective care and services.
We are committed, through our Clinical Governance Strategy, to ensure that the services we provide are of the highest quality and are shaped by everyone who works for us and uses our services. This includes patients and carers.
Clinical Governance has a number of key parts, (also known as pillars) and we model our system around these:

Risk management is the way in which we identify, prevent and minimise the potential for incidents and errors that may harm patients and staff.
Risk management ensures:
- risks are identified and managed;
- incidents or near misses are reported, and where appropriate, steps taken to prevent repeats; and
- claims and complaints are managed appropriately.

Clinical effectiveness is simply defined as the right person doing the right thing (evidence based practice) in the right way (skills and competence) at the right time, in the right place with the right result.
The main areas within clinical effectiveness are:
- sharing knowledge;
- guideline and standard management;
- clinical audit and surveys; and
- managing change.

Involving people: Ensuring that all the people who work for and use our services are treated with dignity and respect and are given opportunities to be involved in their care and service planning.
