Sita Indira – Registered Nurse

From Kerala, South India

“I was working in an Employees State Insurance (ESI) Hospital in India when I decided to apply for a job at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital.

“I was delighted to be accepted and soon arrived in Scotland to start. It was a total culture shock to begin with. The way people are addressed, the language they use – it was all so different from what I was used to and it took some time to adjust.

“I was delighted to be accepted and soon arrived in Scotland to start. It was a total culture shock to begin with. The way people are addressed, the language they use - it was all so different from what I was used to and it took some time to adjust. It's essential to be aware of such cultural variances.

“There is a lot to learn when moving to another country but the process was made easier for me by the support of the Human Resources department in the hospital. They are very approachable and were always available when I needed advice. If it hadn’t have been for their continued support I would not have settled in so easily.

“The hospital also pairs up new starts with a mentor to guide them and answer any questions they may have. This helps staff settle in and I found this is the best way to learn about the differences in the job and the culture. People in Scotland are very friendly and helpful, they have always been happy to answer any questions I have had.

“One of the best things about working in the Golden Jubilee is that the hospital is such a nice, modern environment with single patient rooms. It is a lovely place to work and everyone had been so welcoming.

“I would encourage anyone thinking about applying for a job here to go for it. I have been here six years now and I really enjoy it.”
