Learning and Development
Our Learning and Development Department offers a wide range of learning opportunities for all staff, ranging from management development to induction and mandatory training.
The Learning and Development Department:
- carries out regular needs analysis to identify learning priorities
- manages implementation of the Knowledge and Skills Framework(KSF)
- offers discounted rates on external courses through the Further Education Programme.
We work closely with staff in clinical education to ensure that staff training and learning activity is co-ordinated across disciplines.
Courses provided include:
- induction – mandatory for all staff
- health and safety – mandatory for all staff
- moving and handling – mandatory for all staff
- management development Programme
- handling discipline and grievance
- conflict management
- IT training at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels
- E-KSF training.
The nursing department recognises that providing learning opportunities is of fundamental importance to the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
Our Education Forum consists of the Practice Development Nurse, Clinical Educators, Resuscitation Officer, Manual Handling Coordinator and leads of key services such as infection control, acute pain and tissue viability.
All clinical areas have access to a Clinical Educator or Learning Representative who provides local support to help staff meet their development needs.
Our comprehensive in-service programme ranges from clinical care to professional development and includes:
- full nursing induction
- regular resuscitation training, including Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Immediate Life Support (ILS) – both Resuscitation Council UK approved
- administration of intravenous medications
- defibrillation techniques
- simulation training, e.g. in life-threatening conditions
- National Incremental Competencies in Health Care (NiCHE) programme for health care support workers
- manual handling.
Close links are maintained with the Learning and Development Department and colleagues in other NHS organisations, such as NHS Education for Scotland.
