Clean record

As a national resource for NHSScotland, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital prides itself on delivering an excellent service for the people ofScotland. We have a good track record in providing first class care for all of our patients – care which is safe, effective and person centred.

Prevention and control of infection is of real importance to our patients and is one of our top priorities. We have an extensive programme in place to ensure staff and patients have access to the most up-to-date information and guidance.

We were pleased that this was recognised at our recent unannounced inspection from the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate, which stated that our hospital was “very clean”. And we were even more delighted to receive their recommendation that we should “more clearly promote our low incidence of infection to provide clear assurance to patients and visitors”. So, following that recommendation, I thought I’d tell you how well are we doing.

  • Last year (2011/12) we reduced Staphylococcus Aureus Bacteraemia (SABs) by 52 per cent and Costridium Difficile Infection (CDI) by 31 per cent.
  • We have continually had ‘green’ compliance (above 90 per cent) in the National Cleaning Services Monitoring Tool, with our most recent published figure (January-March 2012) being at 93.7 per cent.
  • We have consistently had above 96 per cent compliance with national audits of hand hygiene.

So how do we do this? Well in fact, it’s all our staff and our volunteers and visitors who do the job.  There’s no one thing that makes the difference; instead it’ lots of seemingly little things that makes this hospital ‘very clean’..

Single patient rooms, strict hand hygiene guidelines and the use of alcohol hand gel all help us control infection. All our housekeeping staff report to our senior manager for prevention and control of infection  and to bring ‘fresh eyes’ to our monitoring, we also have members of the public who undertake quality walk rounds looking at cleanliness within our clinical and non clinical areas.

We are particularly proud of this track record.  I hope you are too. The cleanliness of our hospital has, and always will be, a top priority and if you work at the Golden Jubilee, visit or volunteer then you help us to meet that priority every day.
