Chair blog: making history

This month, the Golden Jubilee Foundation made history when we were runner-up in the Employer of the Year category at the inaugural Icon Awards.

Celebrating the contributions of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and intersex (LGBTI) individuals across Scotland, the Icon Awards were held on Friday 9 October, in a star-studded ceremony in Glasgow.

Competition for the prestigious Employer of the Year award was fierce, with the Golden Jubilee up against 11 other employers on a shortlist which had been narrowed down from more than 90 nominations.

Over the past several years, we have been on a committed journey to equality and diversity, and we are delighted that the Icon Awards recognised all the hard work which has gone into what we are trying to achieve.

The award ceremony was a double celebration as our Employee Director, Equality Lead and Senior Clinical Perfusionist, Jane Christie-Flight, was the only NHS employee, and the only woman, to be shortlisted in the Uniformed Icon of the year category.

To receive this acknowledgment from the Icon Awards, against strong competition from some of the most well established and well known organisations across the private and public sector, is an incredible accomplishment.

It follows on from us being named the Most Improved Employer in Stonewall Scotland’s Workplace Equality Index (WEI), ranking in the top 100 in the UK, top five in Scotland, and the number one NHSScotland Health Board for the fifth year in a row.

All of this underlines just how much equality and diversity are valued at the Golden Jubilee. It highlight the fantastic progress we have made in recent years to celebrate, highlight and develop the diverse team we have that make everything we do on a daily basis not only possible and provide the highest standard of care and service for every patient and visitor that comes through our doors.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally congratulate all of our staff at the Golden Jubilee for achieving runner up in the Employer of the Year category, and many congratulations go to Jane Christie-Flight for being shortlisted as a Uniformed Icon of the Year – it is well deserved and something of which she should be extremely proud.
