Chair blog: quality at the heart of our Foundation

It gives me great pleasure to be able to talk about the next stage in our journey as national resource for the NHS in Scotland.

Following on from last year’s announcement that we would be taking on a key leadership role in innovation for the NHS in Scotland, earlier this week at the NHSScotland Event 2015 we were delighted to announce the launch of the Golden Jubilee Foundation.

Still a national NHS Board, the Golden Jubilee Foundation is simply the new brand name for our campus, which is made up of the family of:

• Golden Jubilee National Hospital;
• Golden Jubilee Research Institute (currently known as the Beardmore Centre for Health Science);
• Golden Jubilee Innovation Centre; and
• Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel (currently the Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre)

We are unique within the NHS, as a national institution which is independently run by its own NHS Board. The launch of the Foundation will help us to re-define the concept of the public hospital and continue to develop our vision to lead quality, research and innovation for NHSScotland.

Our modern, purpose built, environment allows us to combine and take advantage of our top quality hospital and four-star hotel and conference centre as well as research and clinical skills spaces. We are were also delighted and honoured that earlier this week, our state-of-the-art Innovation Centre was officially opened by HRH Prince Charles, the Duke of Rothesay.

At the Golden Jubilee, we pride ourselves on having a patient-led approach that is open, questioning and participative; we want to encourage everyone, whether a patient, staff or visitor, to speak out and be actively involved in our quest for continuous improvement.

To support this, alongside the launch of the Foundation, we announced the development of our unique Quality Framework. This has been designed on a “Once for Scotland” basis to provide easy access to up to date quality, safety, performance and patient experience from individual wards, the hospital as a whole, and NHSScotland.

Thanks to the development of a new digital application ,this information is available at the touch of a button, making our processes more transparent and person centred than ever before.

This is a very exciting time for everyone at the Golden Jubilee. Over the past 12 months we have made fantastic progress in driving forward innovation in the NHS in Scotland, and with this latest step in our evolution, I look forward to being able to help more people across Scotland deal with life changing illnesses and providing a consistently high standard of care for more patients across Scotland than ever before.
