Golden Jubilee to host pioneering clinical course

As part of their ongoing dedication to education, innovation and sharing best practice, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital will be hosting the first Perioperative Transesophageal Echo (TOE) Course next week.

Running from Monday 24 until Thursday 27 August, the course will provide clinicians who have little or no experience of using TOE with hands-on training using the Golden Jubilee’s cardiac theatres and the TOE Simulator, Heartworks.

Dr Karim Elkasrawy, the Course Facilitator and Consultant Anaesthetist at the Golden Jubilee, said: “As the home of quality, research and innovation for the NHS in Scotland, we believe that it is essential that we continue to share best practice with clinicians and medical staff from organisations around the country, facilitating the highest possible standard of care for patients throughout Scotland and the UK.”

In addition to a variety of lectures and seminars, the course provides the opportunity for training and experience in the innovative new Heart Works Simulator – a pioneering system which can accurately replicate echo examination. Consisting of a mannequin, probes and software, the simulator generates real-time high resolution 3D images and video of a beating heart, which can be ‘sliced’ and examined in detail.

Discussing the technology, Karim added: “This kind of training provides a safe, stress-free environment for teaching and allows trainees to practice and raise their confidence and proficiency in a safe manner; addressing any areas for development or teaching needs before they come into contact with patients.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for any individual looking to continue to expand their skill set and is approved for 20 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCOA).”

A second course is set to run in March 2016, with dates yet to be confirmed. For more information, or to find out about last minute availability, head over to
