National Hospital 'highly commended' at catering awards




The Catering Team at Scotland’s National Hospital has been honoured at the country’s most prestigious catering awards – at their first attempt.

The Golden Jubilee National Hospital Catering Team was ‘Highly Commended’ in the Catering Service of the Year category at the Hospital Caterers Association (HCA) Awards, after being shortlisted against hospitals from across the UK.

Held in Glasgow as part of the HCA National Leadership and Development Forum, the HCA Awards recognise hospital caterers who go ‘above and beyond’ to enhance patient experience and support the work of medical teams with healthy, nutritious food.

As well as receiving their certificate of commendation, the team got to meet TV Chef James Martin, who was speaking at the Forum about his campaign to improve hospital food.

Pamela Mailler, Catering Manager at the Golden Jubilee, commented: “This is the first time that the Golden Jubilee has entered the awards, so we were absolutely delighted to be recognised for the service we provide to patients.

“The Forum was very informative, and it was exciting to meet James Martin and hear about his ‘Operation Hospital Food’ campaign. We are hoping he will be able to visit the Golden Jubilee in the future and share his expertise with our team.”

The Golden Jubilee Catering Department provides an inpatient food and beverage service seven days a week, working closely with the Clinical Nutrition team to ensure they meet the required food, fluid and nutrition standards. All food is freshly prepared and cooked on the day, using a hot line food production system to ensure optimum quality in terms of taste, nutritional content and appearance.

The Golden Jubilee team also runs the hospital’s restaurant, the Golden Bistro, which provides an enhanced dining experience for patients, visitors and staff. Recognised as a ‘healthy eating’ venue, the Golden Jubilee holds the Healthy Living Award, a national award for the foodservice sector in Scotland which recognises the important role that caterers play in influencing what customers eat.

Anne Marie Cavanagh, Nurse Director at the Golden Jubilee, commented: “Our Catering team provide an invaluable service in meeting the nutritional needs of our patients and staff. We are very proud that the excellent job they do every day to been recognised by the Hospital Caterers Association.”
