Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine
The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine has established itself as a major centre of excellence in anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine.
The department has an outstanding international reputation attracting visiting anaesthetists from many countries around the world.
Our experienced staff provides services in cardiac, thoracic, orthopaedic and general surgical theatres and in the Cardiology cardiac catheterisation laboratories (cath labs).
Our Consultant Anaesthetists also provide support for our outpatient pre-assessment clinics as well as taking the lead role in the Intensive Care unit (ICU) and the Acute Pain service.
We have an active research programme with main areas of interest including:
- enhanced recovery and regional anaesthesia;
- target-controlled intravenous drug delivery;
- brain function monitoring;
- mechanisms of lung injury; and
- perioperative coagulation disorders.
These areas provide focal points for improving the patient’s journey through the various surgical specialties.
