National Hospital rolling out accessibility tool to all clinical services

Patients visiting NHS Golden Jubilee will benefit from a unique web-based customer service tool to support accessible patient experiences for those with disabilities.

The tool is being made available to patients visiting clinical services at the hospital following a successful 6-month pilot for appointments in the NHS Golden Jubilee Eye Centre in 2021.

The Golden Jubilee University National Hospital was the first hospital in the world to introduce the then ‘WelcoMe App’.

Designed to put disabled people in control of their service experiences, WelcoMe will be rolled out to all outpatients of Scotland’s flagship hospital.

NHS Golden Jubilee Equality and Inclusion Lead Robert White said: “Patients have always been at the heart of everything we do here at NHS Golden Jubilee, and we are delighted to be continuing this exciting collaboration with the team at WelcoMe.

“As a Disability Confident Leader, making sure we are offering the highest quality of care and experience for those who need our services has always been a priority for us, and this project is the latest step in our dedication to creating an accessible space for everyone who comes through our doors.”

Patients can create a free account on the secure WelcoMe website to build and share an accessibility profile with their specific needs and information about when they will be arriving.

WelcoMe allows users to:

·         Set personalised assistance from the time they arrive at the Hospital, throughout their patient journey.

·         Access up to date accessibility and assistance information.

·         Receive direct communication and support, including any changes or issues, in real time.

Gavin Neate, CEO and Founder of WelcoMe, added: “WelcoMe was launched in 2019 and allows disabled people to inform staff at any participating venue of their access and communication needs before they arrive.

“With over 200 destinations now offering the service across the UK and Republic of Ireland we are over the moon that Golden Jubilee has become the first hospital in the world to join us.

“To support a hospital already renowned for its patient care to reach even higher levels of service provision is, for us, a dream come true and we can’t wait for this opportunity to prove what is possible.”
