Our Research Infrastructure

As a medical research institute, running the research portfolio is a complex exercise requiring three distinct groups of staff:

• Research and Development Office;
• Research Support function; and
• Principal Investigator/ Chief Investigator function.

Research and Development Office

The Research and Development Office is the Governance section of the Golden Jubilee Research Institute.

The Medical Director, who is also the Executive Lead for Research, is supported by a Research Director and a Senior Research Manager. Other team members include a Lead Research Nurse, a Research Quality Manager, and a Research Governance Officer. Support is also provided by the Finance department.

Main tasks include the review and approval of research projects and project amendments, providing a monitoring and auditing function and line management of staff that support research (research nurses etc).

Research Support

Research Support is provided by specialist research nurses, physiotherapists and a physiologist.

Each department has a Senior Research Nurse who, as well as maintaining a research portfolio, has an overview of all research projects within their department and has line management responsibility for the group.

The Golden Jubilee hosts research teams that are responsible for research in the following areas:

• The Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit
• Interventional Cardiology
• Advanced Heart Failure
• Anaesthetics/ Cardiac surgery/ Thoracic surgery
• Orthopaedic Surgery

Principal Investigators / Chief Investigators

Each research project must have a clearly identified lead. The Chief Investigator has responsibility for projects at a national (sometimes international) level, whereas the Principal Investigator is responsible for this site only.

In order to support and build this function, the Golden Jubilee will award Extra Programmed Activity (EPA) sessions to consultants and surgeons who are responsible for significant research portfolios.
