Ross goes the extra mile for heart patients

Ross McVean, a Cardiac Physiologist at NHS Golden Jubilee, is preparing to take on the London Marathon on 26 April 2026 - all while raising funds for a cause close to his heart.

This will be Ross’s second time taking on the iconic 26.2-mile challenge, but this time he’s doing it with a clear goal: to raise money and awareness for Cardiomyopathy UK.

Through his role at the Golden Jubilee, Ross works closely with patients impacted by cardiomyopathy - a condition that affects the heart muscle and can have a life-changing impact on individuals and their families.

Approximately 1 in 250 people in the UK are diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy and it is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in people under 35. Cardiomyopathy UK provides vital support, raises awareness and campaigns for better care - with all of its work funded through donations.

Ross has set himself a fundraising target of £2,500 and has already raised more than £1,700. To add a bit of friendly motivation, he has also pledged to donate an extra £10 for every point Liverpool are ahead of Manchester United on the day of the marathon.

“As a Cardiac Physiologist, I’ve seen first-hand the impact cardiomyopathy can have - not just on patients, but on their families too. It’s a charity I feel really passionate about supporting.

“I hope the money raised will help improve the treatment and support available, as well as contribute to future research. Every donation really does make a difference.”

Ross is one of around 70 runners taking part in this year’s marathon for Cardiomyopathy UK - the largest number the charity has ever had.
