Mr Jonathan Hannay, Consultant Surgeon at NHS Golden Jubilee, has been named winner of the Global Citizenship Award at Scotland’s Health Awards 2025, recognising his outstanding contribution to global health.

Jonathan was one of many inspiring individuals nominated for this national award, which celebrates NHS staff who go above and beyond to improve health and wellbeing beyond Scotland’s borders. He was selected for his long-standing commitment to delivering surgical care in one of the most remote regions of Zambia.

For over a decade, Jonathan has volunteered his own time to work at Chitokoloki Mission Hospital, a small but vital facility on the banks of the Zambezi River. Each year, he travels thousands of miles to perform complex surgeries, including cancer, trauma and reconstructive procedures, for patients who often have no other access to treatment.

His work has helped transform lives in a region where resources are limited and patients frequently arrive with advanced conditions. In addition to providing direct care, Jonathan also trains local clinicians and is helping to build links between Zambia and the UK to support future collaboration in research, training and service improvement.

The judging panel praised Jonathan’s dedication, compassion and impact, describing his work as “a powerful example of global citizenship in action.”

Carolynne O’Connor, Chief Executive of NHS Golden Jubilee, said: “We are incredibly proud of Jonathan and thrilled that his work has been recognised with this prestigious award.

“His commitment to improving lives in Zambia reflects our values at NHS Golden Jubilee.

“Jonathan’s story is a reminder of the difference one person can make, and we congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.”

Other NHS Golden Jubilee finalists at the Scottish Health Awards included:

  • Professor Colin Berry – Tackling Health Inequalities Award
  • Andrew Steel – Volunteers Award
  • Eireann Murray – Allied Health Professional Award

Each was recognised for their exceptional contributions to patient care, research and innovation.
