The Golden Jubilee Research Institute facilitates and supports high quality research which conforms to the quality standards required by guidance (the Research Governance Framework for Health and Community Care SGHD 2006) and legislation (the EU Clinical Trials Directive).

We host projects sponsored by device and pharmaceutical companies as well as projects sponsored by Universities and by other NHS organisations.

We are committed to facilitating rapid set up of research projects.

Our Clinical Research Facility (CRF) has 3 consulting rooms, a laboratory and a Motion Analysis Lab. All research follow-up visits take place in this facility.

Clinical Specialities

As a tertiary referral centre, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital specialises in a number of areas for the population of the West of Scotland and, in the case of our National Services, the whole of Scotland. All clinical specialities are research-active, hosting both commercially sponsored/funded and academic studies through links with Universities.

 Colorectal

The colorectal and general surgery research department is in evolution. We started in 2021 and our aim is for all patients to have access to participate in research of their choice during their care at NHS Golden Jubilee.

Currently, patients can consider participating in research related to hernias, robotic surgery, blood liquid biomarkers, implementation science and surgical education. We also support surgeons in training to undertake a higher research degree (MD or PhD), with 5 surgeons in these positions currently.

We participate in UK-wide projects and continue to strive to make the colorectal and general surgical department a centre of excellence for patient-centred surgical research.

 Thoracic

The Thoracic Surgical unit is fully engaged in collaborative trials covering the full range of its specialist activity:

Our portfolio, both current and past, includes the following areas of interest:

  • Surgical and endobronchial therapies for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and emphysema
  • Prehabilitation for thoracic surgery
  • Mesothelioma
  • Lung cancer
  • Registry studies on thymic epithelial malignancies and COPD
  • Training methods in robotic surgery

In many of these trials, we have achieved high recruitment, while several have been practice-changing.
