Nurse leader Anne-Marie recognised for 4 decades of service to Scottish healthcare
NHS Golden Jubilee Director of Nursing Anne-Marie Cavanagh has been recognised for an extraordinary career spanning more than 40 years of dedicated service to patients, staff and healthcare services across Scotland.
From beginning her nursing career as a student nurse in 1983, to becoming one of Scotland’s most respected nursing leaders, Anne-Marie has devoted her professional life to improving patient care, developing the nursing workforce and championing the values of compassion, kindness and excellence.
Throughout a distinguished career that has spanned frontline clinical practice, education, management and executive leadership, Anne-Marie has remained firmly rooted in the values of nursing. Known for her compassionate leadership style, she has inspired and supported generations of nurses and healthcare professionals, while helping shape the future of healthcare in Scotland.
Reflecting on Anne-Marie’s contribution, NHS Golden Jubilee Chief Executive Carolynne O’Connor, said: “Anne-Marie has dedicated more than f4 decades to improving the lives of patients, supporting staff and advancing the nursing profession.
“She is an exceptional leader whose compassion, integrity and commitment to excellence have inspired countless colleagues throughout her career.
“Her impact extends far beyond NHS Golden Jubilee. Through her leadership, mentorship and unwavering belief in people, she has helped shape the careers of generations of healthcare professionals and has made a lasting contribution to healthcare across Scotland.”
Anne-Marie began her nursing career at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, gaining extensive experience in cardiology, cardiothoracic care, high dependency and intensive care settings. Alongside her clinical work, she pursued further academic study, achieving both an Honours degree and a Master's degree in nursing management.
A passionate advocate for workforce development, Anne-Marie has spent her career investing in people, championing opportunities for healthcare support workers, aspiring nurse leaders and advanced practitioners to develop their skills and careers.
Her mentorship and encouragement have enabled countless healthcare professionals to progress into leadership and specialist roles.
When Scotland’s cardiothoracic and transplant services transferred to NHS Golden Jubilee in 2008, Anne-Marie played a leading role in one of the most significant service transformations in Scottish healthcare. Her ability to bring together teams from different organisations helped create the collaborative culture that continues to define NHS Golden Jubilee today.
Since being appointed Nurse Director in 2015, Anne-Marie has provided exceptional leadership through a period of significant organisational growth, service development and unprecedented challenges.
As the organisation’s longest-serving Board Director, she has ensured nursing remains at the heart of strategic decision-making while championing a culture where staff feel valued, supported and empowered.
Among her most significant achievements has been her role in establishing the Golden Jubilee Nursing Academy, which evolved into the NHS Scotland Academy. Today, the Academy supports healthcare professionals across the country and is recognised as one of Scotland’s most important workforce development initiatives.
Anne-Marie’s influence also extends beyond NHS Golden Jubilee.
As Co-Chair of the Scottish Executive Nurse Directors Group, she has helped shape nursing leadership nationally, contributing to discussions on workforce development, professional practice and the future direction of nursing across Scotland.
Her leadership was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she provided visible and compassionate support to staff, while also serving as Nurse Director for NHS Louisa Jordan, contributing directly to Scotland’s national response to the crisis.
Carolynne O’Connor added: “Anne-Marie’s legacy can be seen not only in the services she has helped develop and the organisations she has influenced, but in the many individuals she has encouraged, supported and empowered to achieve their full potential.
“We are incredibly proud of everything she has accomplished and grateful for the extraordinary contribution she has made to our organisation, our profession and the people of Scotland.”

Those values have underpinned her leadership and helped establish her as one of Scotland’s most respected nursing figures.
As she approaches the culmination of more than 40 years of service, Anne-Marie leaves an enduring legacy of excellence, innovation and compassion that will continue to benefit patients, staff and healthcare services for years to come.
Anne-Marie said: “Looking back on more than 40 years in nursing, I feel incredibly privileged to have been part of a profession that has given me so many opportunities to learn, grow and make a difference to people's lives.
“It has been an honour to spend much of my career at NHS Golden Jubilee, working alongside exceptional colleagues whose commitment, compassion and professionalism inspire me every day.
“The achievements we have celebrated as an organisation have only ever been possible because of the dedication of our teams, who consistently go above and beyond for patients and one another.
“I have been fortunate to work with and learn from so many talented people throughout my career, from those on the frontline of patient care to those supporting our services behind the scenes.
“Seeing colleagues develop, progress and achieve their potential has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey.
“While I am proud of what we have accomplished together, I believe the real legacy lies in the people who will continue to shape the future of healthcare.
“Nursing is a profession built on compassion, kindness and teamwork, and I am confident that the next generation will continue to lead with those values at its heart.
“I leave with enormous gratitude for the friendships, support and experiences I have gained over the years, and with sincere thanks to everyone who has been part of that journey.”
