Medical Practice donates to support transplant patients

Clydeside Barclay Medical Practice has donated £500 to support the heart transplant team at NHS Golden Jubilee, following a personal experience that deeply impacted their staff.

The decision to support the service was driven by one of their colleagues, Leeann Asiedu, whose husband Jason is currently receiving care while waiting for a heart transplant. Jason, 47, from Drumchapel, had previously been fit and healthy, with no known history of heart problems.

Earlier this year, he became unwell with what was initially thought to be a prolonged viral illness. However, his condition quickly worsened, and further tests revealed that he required a full heart transplant. Since being admitted to NHS Golden Jubilee in January, Jason has remained in hospital under the care of the specialist transplant team while he waits for a suitable donor.

Despite the challenges, Jason has remained positive throughout his treatment and continues to take part in physiotherapy, staying as active as possible while he waits.

Seeing first-hand the care, compassion and support provided to both patients and their families played a key role in the team’s decision to donate.

Leeann tells us: "The nurses and staff have been amazing. They’re always checking in, not just on Jason but on me as well. It’s completely different from anywhere else we’ve been, we really can’t thank them enough.”

“My work has been incredible too. The support I’ve had from everyone has been phenomenal and choosing to donate was something that meant a lot to all of us.”

For the team, donating to the transplant service was a way of giving back and recognising the impact that care has had.

The donation forms part of a £1,000 prize the practice received through an internal competition, which the team chose to give back to causes close to their hearts. Allocating £500 to the transplant service was a way of showing their appreciation and supporting the team caring for Jason and others like him.
