The Finance Team at NHS Golden Jubilee has been named Scotland’s “Finance Team of the Year” at the Healthcare Finance Managers Association (HFMA) Scotland Awards.

The judges praised the team for its collaborative approach, strong leadership, and commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring NHS Golden Jubilee delivers high-quality care in a financially sustainable way.

Driving efficiency and excellence

The award recognises the team’s success in implementing the ‘Achieving the Balance programme’, a strategic initiative designed to address the gap between funding and service costs without compromising patient care.

In the past year, the NHS Scotland Board achieved a £51,000 surplus, delivered £10.5 million in savings, and invested £14.7 million in capital projects, including the development of their new Surgical Centre and the purchase of advanced medical equipment.

These achievements demonstrate a strong commitment to financial stewardship and innovation, ensuring resources are used effectively to enhance patient care and future-proof services.

Key areas of impact include:

  • Management: Cost-effective prescribing and waste reduction initiatives led by pharmacy teams in partnership with Finance.
  • Procurement Excellence: Strategic supplier negotiations and bulk purchasing have delivered substantial savings across high-cost areas such as orthopaedics and ophthalmology.
  • Workforce Optimisation: Recruitment of permanent staff has reduced reliance on agency workers, lowering costs and improving continuity of care.
  • Digital Transformation: Investments in digital infrastructure have streamlined patient communications and reduced paper use, supporting efficiency and sustainability goals.

The Finance team plays a pivotal role in capital planning, managing £19.2 million in investment this year to upgrade infrastructure, enhance sustainability, and future-proof clinical services. Projects include the installation of a new CT scanner, theatre recovery upgrades, and energy-efficient improvements to reduce operational costs and carbon footprint.

Jonny Gamble, Director of Finance at NHS Golden Jubilee, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to receive this award.

“Through close collaboration with clinical, operational, and support teams, collectively we have delivered significant savings while maintaining operational excellence.

“We’re proud to support the organisation in delivering world-class care for patients across Scotland.”

Carolynne O’Connor, Chief Executive of NHS Golden Jubilee, added: “This is fantastic recognition for our Finance Team, who play a vital role in helping us deliver safe, effective and person-centred care. Congratulations to everyone involved.”

The HFMA Scotland Awards form part of a wider programme that celebrates the achievements of finance professionals working in NHS organisations across the UK.
