NHS Golden Jubilee transplant patient wins medals at European Transplant Games
Transplant patient Alison Gray has returned from the European Transplant Games in Arnhem, Netherlands, with a silver and bronze medal after representing Great Britain at the international event.
Alison, a passionate advocate for organ donation and transplantation, competed in a range of events during the week-long competition while also serving as part of the Great Britain management team. The games brought together transplant recipients from across Europe to celebrate the life-changing impact of organ donation through sport.
Despite challenging conditions, including extreme temperatures throughout the week, Alison achieved outstanding results. She secured a bronze medal in the team pairs golf event and a silver medal in the ladies’ singles gross category, competing against a strong international field. She also took part in darts and ten-pin bowling, using the opportunity to meet and share experiences with transplant recipients from across Europe.
The games held particular significance for Alison, who was able to share the experience with her brother, now more than 38 years post-heart transplant. Reflecting on the event, Alison described it as an unforgettable week and said she felt honoured to represent Great Britain as part of the management team.
Alison's achievements continue to demonstrate the transformative impact of organ transplantation and the opportunities it creates for people to lead active, fulfilling lives. Her success also shines a light on the importance of organ donation and the vital role it plays in giving people a second chance.
Looking ahead, Alison has recently helped establish a new transplant sports team, which is expected to compete at the UK Transplant Games next month in Sheffield. The team aims to encourage more transplant recipients to get involved in sport, build confidence and celebrate what can be achieved following transplantation.
Congratulations to Alison from everyone at Team Jubilee on her fantastic success in the Netherlands, and we wish her and the new team every success in the upcoming UK Transplant Games.
