NHS Golden Jubilee physiotherapist gearing up for Commonwealth Games cycling dream
NHS Golden Jubilee is celebrating the success of Senior Physiotherapist, Madeleine (Maddy) Silcock, who has been selected to represent Team Scotland at this summer’s Commonwealth Games.
The 26-year-old, who works at NHS Golden Jubilee in Clydebank, will compete in the team sprint event at Glasgow’s Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on Thursday 30 July, following a remarkable rise through the ranks of elite cycling.
Maddy only took up track cycling three-and-a-half years ago after a successful athletics career. Since then, her dedication and natural talent have seen her progress rapidly to the international stage while continuing her full-time role supporting patients at NHS Golden Jubilee.
Originally from Aberdeenshire, Maddy first took up cycling in Cardiff after being encouraged to try a new sporting challenge. What began as a talent transfer opportunity quickly developed into a promising cycling career.
Since relocating to Glasgow in 2025 to train alongside her coach and be closer to family, Maddy has continued to go from strength to strength. Earlier this year, she produced one of the fastest Scottish lap times recorded in recent years at the British National Championships and secured her first national medal as part of a bronze medal-winning team.
Now, Maddy is preparing to compete on one of the biggest stages of her career, representing Team Scotland in front of a home crowd at the Commonwealth Games this summer.
Maddy said: “I feel incredibly proud. To go from one sport into a completely new one and reach a senior major Games like the Commonwealths is something I never imagined a few years ago.
“Knowing it’s in Glasgow makes it even more special, having that support from a home crowd and my family will be incredible.”
Alongside her sporting commitments, Maddy works full-time as a Senior Physiotherapist at NHS Golden Jubilee in Clydebank.
Balancing an intensive training schedule of up to 6 days a week with her professional role, she credits the support and flexibility of her colleagues and management team as being key to her success.
She added: “It’s not easy managing both, but I’ve had amazing support from my team, which has made all the difference. Being able to adjust my hours and have that flexibility has allowed me to train and prepare properly for the Games.”
Looking ahead, Maddy is aiming to deliver a strong performance in the team's sprint event, with her sights firmly set on reaching the podium.
Joint Acting Head of Rehabilitation, Fiona Nolan said: “Everyone at NHS Golden Jubilee is incredibly proud of Maddy and what she has achieved. To balance a demanding role as a Senior Physiotherapist with the dedication, discipline and commitment required to compete at this level is truly inspiring.
“Maddy’s determination, professionalism and positive attitude are a credit to her colleagues and our organisation. We wish her every success and look forward to cheering her on.”
Chief Executive, Carolynne O’Connor, said: “Maddy’s selection for Team Scotland is a fantastic achievement and reflects the dedication, resilience and excellence she demonstrates both in her sporting career and in her work at NHS Golden Jubilee.
“She carries with her the full support of everyone across the organisation, and we will all be behind her every step of the way as she prepares to represent Scotland on the Commonwealth stage and we wish her every success and look forward to cheering her on.”
