Borrow Cup scheme cuts waste, carbon and costs as NHS Golden Jubilee marks World Environment Day
NHS Golden Jubilee’s is celebrating the success of its Borrow Cup scheme, which has reduced waste, lowered carbon emissions and reduced costs – with the financial savings being redirected to frontline services.
The scheme has eliminated around 72,800 single cups since launching in the Golden Bistro during World Environment Week last year – around 1,400 per week.
This reduction has helped cut the organisation’s environmental impact, with an estimated saving of around 1.8 tonnes of carbon emissions over 12 months, based on typical emissions associated with disposable cups and lids.
The scheme has also delivered substantial financial benefits. With single-use cups and lids costing 19p per item, the reduction equates to a saving of around approximately £14,000 per year. These savings are now being reinvested directly into frontline patient services.
The scheme is simple and flexible. For a £1 deposit, staff can:
- Re-use the cup and receive a discount in the dining room or at participating locations
- Return the cup for a £1 refund
- Swap it for a clean cup and continue using the scheme
Staff can also use their cups at more than 40 participating outlets across Glasgow, including Costa Coffee, Burger King and Café Nero.
Lynne Ayton, Executive Director of Operations, NHS Golden Jubilee, said: “Borrow a Cup is a simple idea that is making a real difference. In just one year, we have reduced waste, saved thousands of pounds and lowered our carbon footprint.
“Importantly, the savings being made are being reinvested into frontline services, which means this scheme is not only good for the environment but also directly benefits patient care. As we mark World Environment Day, it shows how small, practical changes can have a big impact for both our health service and the communities we serve.”
The Borrow Cup scheme is part of NHS Golden Jubilee’s wider commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental impact while continuing to deliver high-quality care.
