As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, a Commis Chef from the Golden Jubilee has shared her success story after completing a Modern Apprenticeship with the Golden Jubilee.

Isabel Anderson’s story from securing her apprenticeship to gaining a permanent position within the Golden Jubilee National Hospital’s catering team was one of the main features at last week’s NHSScotland Employability and Apprenticeship Network Event.

The success of this apprenticeship has also led the Golden Jubilee National Hospital Catering Team to be shortlisted in the Training and Apprenticeship category at next month’s Cost Sector Catering Awards.

Isabel commented: “I had previously had an opportunity to do work experience in the Golden Jubilee catering department, so when the apprenticeship came up, I decided to go for it.

“The assessments were both written and practical and I had a lot of support from the team to help me prepare for them. When I passed and got the permanent job, I was so happy and proud of myself.

“I would recommend young people to consider an apprenticeship as I have secured a full time job from it and you don’t know what the future will hold. My own plan for the future is to stay at the Golden Jubilee and hopefully get a promotion.”

Elaine Gallagher, Senior Chef de Partie at the Golden Jubilee, commented: “It is rewarding that the Golden Jubilee has been recognised for their work on apprenticeships during the Year of Young People.

“It is really important that we support opportunities for young people, and help them  through the first stages of their career.

“Isabel has been an absolutely wonderful student. Her time management was fantastic and she put everything into her practical work.”

Pamela Mailler, Catering Manager, added: “We definitely selected the right person and we look forward to seeing her continue to flourish.

“Taking on a Modern Apprentice has definitely been the right decision for us and I’m proud of every single member of the Catering team for the way they have supported and mentored Isabel.”
